Magazine Advertisement

I explored two ideas behind my magazine advertisement. Firstly, one was a boat dock tinted in blue and purple colouring with a dark sky. Initially I deemed this as appropriate due to the mix of dark connotations due to the sky - an unwelcome, overpowering sadness which is also presented in the music video. Then also the water presented throughout the digipack which connotes calmness and serenity, which I felt would appeal to an audience through a magazine.

However as I developed this idea I came to the realisation that a magazine advert would call for a more commercial stance since the boat dock as a film image was beautiful but not in a grasping, strong way. Therefore I explored on Photoshop with the image I used for the front cover of my digipack. By repeating the image three times, it exaggerates the initial effect of the photo - confusion, distortion and at the same time tranquillity. By reflecting the images against each other it also creates an almost overwhelming, all-consuming impression to the audience which would make a more eye-grabbing appealing advertisement.

The text is also the same font as on the digipack only larger in size and central, therefore more noticeable. Therefore the audience would notice the advertisement and place the connotations of the images with the band name successfully.

Photo shop in progress

Below is the image that I am working on for the front cover for my card digipack. Originally I chose the image as it correlates for the themes we aimed to get across to the audience in our music video. (Of isolation, confusion, a difficulty to breath/live) I also chose the image because the girl is only half in the water, which creates an interesting image since if a music video features water, often the character is wholly underwater (such as Nirvana). I edited the colour filter on the girl, so the image looks more dynamic and captivating as previously the whole photo was one similar colour. On of my favourite parts of this image is the merkiness of the water where her head is, as it implies a confused state of mind. This would imply to the target audience that the artist explores themes and ideas that aren't stereotypical, that are personal. An indie-pop audience would appreciate this because they tend to look for music which is unique and original.

The next aspect i was working on was the inside of the CD. I wanted to have it slightly contrasting to the outside, to show that the album had diversity and didn't just have one aspect for their music. A collage of differently filtered images, together, was something i thought would visually look strong. However once I created this collage, it seemed to lack continuality with the cover at all, therefore i added the layer of a wave over the images. This not only tints them slightly blue, it subtly links to the front cover and overall theme of water. Waves also have many conotations which may generate interest towards the artist and their music - such as powerful, a new start. The Japenese say that the wave symbolises one of the strongest forces on earth, which destroys anything bad. Therefore the band's music is represented as a new wave of original music, before the CD has even been played.
Then i started working on this image as the back cover, I rotated the image of the girl in order to emphasise how under the water she is. I chose this iamge because of the distorted yet soft nature of it. The mix of the hair and dress collaborated sums up the soft tone we aimed to portray in our music video, with Ellie's character. I chose to have the white and black text on the front and back in order to represent the same connotations as our greyscale music video. (Of simplicity, elegance, purity etc). The theme of water which runs through the images in itself, presents a sense of calmness and peacefulness which would present the artist and brand as quite sensual and good to listen to. At first I played with the font size, since I wanted it to be subtle and something the indie-pop fan would have to look for and is therefore enigmatic. Yet it had to be readable and suitable, or there needn't be any font on the CD cover. Therefore I settled for a clear font which is simple and classy, yet readable and clear.
