Narrative of Gabrielle Aplin's music video

This video's narrative focus' around a couple who have broken up. It begins in the present tense with Gabrielle alone thinking about the memories she has, this is shown throughout the video by flash backs of the couple looking happy together. The flash backs come to an end towards the end of the video, which is the explaination to the audience why in the present shots of Gabrielle she looks so down. Yet the flash backs tell the story of how their relationship went from very good to bad, this keeps the audience's interest up as they are gradually discovering the narrative, it is not simplistically linear (which some may be used to). The flashbacks always cut forward to similar shots of Gabrielle in the present playing her guitar to reiterate to the audince that she's having flash backs.  The setting of the shots are often very different eg. at the pub, creating a puzzle to create the impression that time had passed when they were together and therefore when it is revealed that they broke up the audience is saddened.

  1. Yes it was quite sad! The links between her playing alone and playing with boyfriend worked well. Also the lighting and costume of her playing alone seemed very stylised and therefore isolating - whereas the scenes of them together were more naturalistic and therefore warm.
